‘Foundations’ seminar success
Back

April 2008

STATS is delighted with the success of its latest afternoon seminar, held on 29th April at Hertfordshire University’s Fielder Centre, entitled ‘Recycling Foundations’.

Professor John Atkinson, formerly of City University, chaired the event. Prof Atkinson said: “The ground is full up with old foundations. A key design issue is what to do about these – use them again, ignore them or dig them out.” The seminar looked at ways that this should be approached.

Among the topics discussed were how to tackle old foundations, a talk by Edwin Bergbaum, Director of the Waterman Group; and ‘Key decisions, design process and management of risk’ by Arup Director Tim Chapman.

Further lectures included ‘Assessing concrete and steel deterioration’ by Dr Ian Sims, Director at STATS; and fellow Director Dr Shon Williams focused on how to investigate piled foundations for integrity and load capacity.

The event was well attended by civil, structural and geotechnical engineers, developers and project managers, as well as many other interested parties.

STATS Chairman Adrian Marsh, added: “This is a very important issue in today’s construction industry and I trust that delegates found the lectures and discussions extremely valuable.”

Delegate copies of the presentations and literature are available on request by emailing rosemary.stace@stats.co.uk.
