STATS was formed in 1974 by John Glanville, a leading civil engineer and specialist in forensic investigation and expert witness work, to provide a professional investigation and assessment service into emerging problems with the deterioration of concrete in service around the world. These problems included the ‘conversion’ of high alumina cement, alkali-aggregate reactivity and various forms of sulfate attack. Hence at its outset STATS was primarily involved in undertaking structural investigations, building surveys and associated materials testing, evaluation and consultancy, which essentially complemented the traditional skills of the consulting engineer, architect and surveyor.
By the early 1980s the skills base and resources of the company had steadily grown and broadened to encompass site investigation and geotechnical consultancy for developers, materials evaluation and compliance testing for major infrastructure construction projects and asbestos surveying and monitoring for facilities managers and property owners.
In the geotechnical and contaminated land arena, we have been one of the UK’s leading fully integrated site investigation and consultancy firms for over two decades. During this period we have been responsible for many of the UK’s major property and infrastructure projects, including Teesside Power Station, Europe’s largest gas-fired power station, Berkeley Group’s Chelsea Bridge Wharf mixed-use development, MEPC’s business parks at Chineham, Milton Park and Granta Park, National Grid’s Brecon to Tirley gas pipeline and over 100 new Sainsbury’s supermarkets and store extensions.
Partnering with many local authorities and private sector property portfolio owners to provide asbestos survey and management services and legionella risk assessment and water quality management services has also been an enduring success under a variety of types of term framework agreements.
At the height of the UK’s motorway construction boom in the late 1980s and early 1990s, STATS employed around 250 materials engineers, technicians and specialist fabrication, welding and coating inspectors providing independent quality control on numerous sections of motorways across the network, including the A1(M), M2, M3, M6, M20, M25, M40, M62 and M74 Motorways. With changes in government procurement policies for highways, the role of independent QA/QC organisations was phased out and for STATS the A34 Newbury Bypass was the last major such project. However, in the rail sector STATS has had the opportunity to continue in this field with responsibility for materials testing on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link contracts 420 (Mid-Kent), 342 (Swanscombe), 320 (Thames Tunnel) and 105 (St Pancras Station).
Foreseeing the decline in demand in the UK for independent QA/QC services, STATS continued to build on its core professional competencies to become a specialist multi-disciplinary consultancy practice, with allied technical services, providing genuine expertise in a coherent range of related fields. For instance, STATS now has one of the UK’s leading geophysical surveying and data interpretation businesses outside of the oil industry.
This growth is also reflected in the wide range of environmental services offered that span the full life cycle of the built environment. Helping our clients to secure planning permission for developments now forms a key element to our services. We are able to provide both an overall environmental impact assessment package or where appropriate the specialist survey and assessment input in areas like air quality, ecology, flood risk assessment, ground quality and stability, noise and vibration.
Throughout its over 30 years of existence STATS has retained an international dimension to its work, primarily with materials consultancy appointments across five continents including in the Caribbean region, Europe, Sub-Saharan and North Africa, Middle East, South Asia and South East Asia. Geotechnical and seismic engineering projects have also been undertaken in Europe, Africa and Asia.

In January
2008 STATS joined RSK Group plc, the UK’s largest privately
owned environmental consultancy. This will permit STATS
to continue its growth and allow our clients to benefit
from a much wider range of health and safety, environmental,
engineering and related services from within the group. |
