GPR has enormous potential for use on engineered structures. Over the past ten years many structural investigations have been conducted by STATS Geophysical which has resulted in a large knowledge base of reflection types obtained from various structural features.

In conjunction with our Structures and Materials divisions we have conducted numerous investigations aimed at determining construction detail and internal metalwork in a variety of modern and historic buildings.

Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) allows rapid non-destructive coverage, with a depth penetration of up to 2m. The approach allows us to image multiple layers of construction detail, the calculation of thicknesses, and the location of internal metalwork including multiple layers of reinforcement.

Landfill waste and leachate typically constitute electrically conductive targets. Surface mapping of subsurface conductivity or resistivity can delineate landfill boundaries and associated infrastructure. Vertical profiling (or imaging) produces cross sections from which it is possible to infer waste depth and zones of potential leachate migration.

A range of geophysical techniques are appropriate to investigate the geometry and characteristics of landfills, and their application can be tailored to the specifics of a particular site.

Borehole geophysics takes advantage of using regular geophysical techniques at depth down a borehole. Techniques available include: Seismics, GPR, Magnetics and Resistivity. The techniques operate in the same manner as they would on the surface, with the advantage of providing high resolution data at depth.

The utility of the GPR technique in the investigation of historic buildings is gaining increasing recognition. GPR surveys have proven to be very useful in the rapid,and non-destructive, location of metal structures such as cramps, dowels, beams and bolts.Particular success is also recorded in the measurement of material thickness in facing stones.

Geophysical techniques area capable of locating and determining the depth to services that may not be traced by traditional radiodetection or surveying approaches. Accurate location and depth information can be determined for non-metallic services such as cable ducts or plastic or clay pipes. These techniques are also capable of looking far deeper than a radiodetection sonde can penetrate, and therefore provide a methodology to locate deeper structures such as sewers.

In situations where the geology or depth to bedrock is poorly constrained, geophysics can provide valuable information. Natural voids, sedimentary structures, or fractures and faults can cause significant problems if they remain undetected.

Electromagnetic mapping, electromagnetic profiling, electrical resistivity imaging, electrical resistivity sounding, seismic refraction and seismic reflection are all commonly employed in assessing near surface geology. Stratigraphy, depth to bedrock, presence of voids and hydrogeological assessments are all common applications of geophysical techniques.
