Teesside power station

At 1725MW, Enron’s Teesside power plant at Wilton is Europe’s largest gas-fired station. STATS provided a full geotechnical and foundations consultancy service for the project. This included undertaking extensive ground investigations and providing numerical analysis, design and advice, particularly in relation to the piled raft foundation systems and for earthworks.

The 1980's guide to concrete bridge investigation

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s STATS undertook several hundred detailed inspections and investigations into the condition and servicability of reinforced concrete bridges across the UK’s motorway and truck road network. The Department of Transport then commissioned STATS to prepare a definitive technical guide on the design, methodology, specification and quality control of such investigations on reinforced concrete bridges.

MEPC Milton Park

In 1974 EPC, later taken over by MEPC, acquired around 100 hectares of near-derelict industrial land near Oxford. In a staged programme of building and infrastructure redevelopment the land has been transformed in one of the UK’s premier research and commercial business parks. In long-term partnership with the developers and consulting engineers, Glanvilles, STATS has provided site investigation, geotechnical and environmental consultancy services for the regeneration.

M40 London to Birmingham Motorway

STATS provided the Department of Transport and their consulting engineers with on-site UKAS-accredited laboratory testing and materials advice services for the construction of the Banbury Bypass, the High Wycombe to Stokenchurch widening and widening/reconstruction works in Hillingdon. STATS also provided extensive off-site inspection services for pre-cast concrete manufacturing and steel fabrication.

Thelwall Viaduct

The first viaduct was built in the 1960s over the Manchester Ship Canal and River Mersey and comprised a composite steel beam and concrete deck of around 2km in length supported on 36 concrete piers of up to 35m in height. The second parallel crossing was constructed in the 1990s. STATS has provided:

Structural investigations into the condition of the original viaduct including a full half-cell and covermeter survey, sampling, testing and petrographic examination
Ground investigations for the foundations of the second viaduct
On-site laboratory services for the construction of the second viaduct and refurbishment of the original structure.

Hong Kong Housing PMT Services

In joint venture with MMBP International STATS provided professional materials testing services from 1992-1996 to the HK Housing Authority for the quality control of their vast affordable housing construction programme.
The commission required a team of experienced materials engineers and technicians to supervise on-site materials sampling and testing and to undertake quality auditing of the commercial laboratories engaged to undertake the bulk of the testing.

M74 Carlisle to Glasgow Motorway

STATS provided the Scottish Office with a comprehensive on-site materials testing and advice service from 1991-1996 for the construction of some 100 miles of dual, 3-lane motorway across the Southern Uplands, including the provision of the project’s large UKAS-accredited central laboratory at Lockerbie, plus satellite laboratories on each main construction contract site. STATS employed a workforce of up to 100 engineers, technicians and inspectors on this project.

Rail & Bus Privatisation

During the mid-1990s STATS assisted both London Transport and Railtrack in identifying and quantifying environmental risks pertaining to their property portfolios and certain infrastructure assets.
The various commissions included undertaking:

Phase 1 audits of every bus garage in Greater London
Phase 2 intrusive audits of extensive tracts of railway land in NW England, and
An audit of London’s Waterloo-City line and sections of the District underground line.

A Generation of Supermarkets

STATS has maintained close working relationships with most of the UK’s major supermarket retailers, providing geotechnical and geoenvironmental investigation and consultancy services for over 100 new stores and store extensions, together with other environmental services in asbestos management, air quality and noise monitoring and consultancy.

Bluewater Retail Park

Bluewater Park is the largest retail development constructed to date in Europe. STATS was commissioned to appraise, by quarry visits, laboratory examination and testing, and approve potential sources of high quality stone flooring materials from across Europe. Special tests were devised to ascertain key parameters such as resistance to staining for flooring materials in the fast-food and restaurant areas.

Vodafone Property Portfolio

STATS has been retained since 1999 by Vodafone’s Facilities Management team to undertake internal water quality risk assessments and routine sampling and analysis for the control of Legionellosis across a substantial property portfolio across southern England.

The Ovaltine Building

The listed façade of the Ovaltine Building at Kings Langley has been admired by rail travelers on the Euston-West Coast Mainline for over a century. When its industrial owners decided to move production elsewhere, STATS was engaged to provide a pre-divestment environmental audit.
The new owners were subsequently faced with the challenge of redeveloping the main building around a retained façade. STATS undertook an extensive structural investigation to determine the precise form and connection details for the structure and building envelope together with advising on its temporary support during redevelopment.

Chelsea Bridge Wharf

This prominent central London development comprises over 600 luxury apartments, 150 "Key Worker Housing" units, 70,000 ft2 of offices, a 234 room 4 Star hotel, plus retail units and health club. The structures rise to 11 storeys plus contain various basement levels.

STATS provided an integrated geotechnical and geoenvironmental investigation and consultancy service for the project including contaminated ground remediation design.
